The GALA Queer Archive (GALA) invites applications for a full-time office administrator post

We are seeking a candidate who is dynamic, politically aware, organised, meticulous and professional in carrying out administration duties to a high standard, in order to help the organisation achieve its goals. The incumbent should be committed to the development and promotion of human rights, especially within LGBTQIA+ communities in South Africa.

The Position:

The Office Administrator is responsible for maintaining the GALA office by organising office operations and procedures (which includes office maintenance), preparing payroll and project budgets, controlling all official correspondence, couriers, and document storage, designing filing systems, reviewing and approving supply requisitions, and conducting clerical functions (such as taking minutes). The Office Administrator reports to the GALA director. 

Desired Work Experience: 2 to 3 years.

 

Requirements:

  • Relevant post-matric qualification. Candidates with financial management experience are preferred.
  • Johannesburg office based position.
  • As the front of house person, interpersonal communication skills are necessary to effectively engage with GALA stakeholders and service providers.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience with technology and software. Competencies in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, WhatsApp and Google Workspace are essential. Experience in reading and understanding general ledger and management accounts is beneficial.
  • Where required, attending and providing support at GALA events
  • Applicants must have valid authorisation to work in South Africa.
  • Preference will be given to LGBTQIA+ persons of colour.
  • Proficiency in more than one South African vernacular language is favourable.

Position to be filled by the latest 1 of March 2024.

The GALA Queer Archive (GALA) is a non-profit organisation that has as its main objective the promotion, protection and advocacy of the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) people in South Africa. It does so in part through documenting and sharing the lives and histories of LGBTQIA+ people. 

Its activities include: managing, maintaining and collecting relevant archival material; exhibitions, seminars, workshops and other public events; the production of academic research and relevant publication.
