Ekurhuleni’s 8Th Annual Pride March

On Saturday 10 September, the Municipality of Ekurhuleni hosted its 8th annual Pride event in the Vosloorus Stadium. The LGBTI community of Ekurhuleni has been under regular threat of hate crimes, and this was therefore a focal message communicated by this year’s pride event. There was a strong presence and support from the City of Ekurhuleni, and the decision to host the event in the Vosloorus stadium was a clear sign of their partnership. The Department of Health/Ekurhuleni Health and Social Development had a Mobile clinic set up, along with organizations such as Anova and PASOP GP (HIV/Aids awareness program/campaign), who were out distributing condoms, promoting safe sex and fighting stigma. The theme of this year’s Ekurhuleni Pride was Military, symbolizing the LGBTI community’s active fight and battle against violence and stigma in the area.

People from the local community attended the event as well as people from Johannesburg, Springs and surrounding areas of the East Rand. The parade started at the stadium and moved through  McBotha Street and Makonya Street, and then to Khoza Street before heading back to the stadium for a picnic and DJ set.

A shout out to EPOC (Ekurhuleni Pride Organizing Committee) for executing another successful Pride event.
