GALA Mission Statement

The advancement, development and rights of LGBTI people depend on an accurate record and representation of their struggles. GALA mobilises memory by documenting and popularizing the lives and histories of LGBTI South Africans. In so doing it contributes to the development of pride, challenges homophobia and entrenches the rights of LGBTI people.

Recent Activity

Director Ruth Morgan resigns

GALA is sad to announce that Dr. Ruth Morgan, who has been our director since 2001, has resigned. Ruth has been crucial in growing GALA as an organization and mentoring both staff and visitors who came through the offices. She will continue to collaborate with us but has decided to finally take some time to focus on herself and her writing, and we are happy for her as friends, though we feel her loss as co-workers.

The Remembrance Wall

Pride 2008 in Johannesburg & Soweto

by Elsie Abraham (visiting Canadian volunteer), October 4, 2008

The Remembrance Wall materializes at last! GALA, OUT and Johannesburg Pride came together to showcase the living history of the LGBTI community during Pride week. With th help of activist Kate Chrisholm they came up with the idea of a mural-type of exhibition where people could leave their own mark, and this became the Remembrance Wall that was on display at the Soweto and Johannesburg Pride March sites. The wall served as a forum for people to voice their thoughts, particularly with regard to this year's theme, “Love, not hate” in honor of black lesbians who have overwhelmingly been the victims of hate crimes and violence directed at South Africa's LGBTI communities.
