Simon Nkoli Memorial Lecture – 'Preserving the Legacy of Nkoli: Addressing Current Challenges'

4:30 – 7:30
Human Rights Room, Old Fort, Constitution Hill
Free

Join us to celebrate and learn from the life of Simon Nkoli, an icon of the LGBTI, HIV and anti-apartheid movements.

The event's speakers will unpack Nkoli's significant contribution to the fight for freedom in South Africa. The panel will reflect on our constitutional democracy and the influence of activism on current legislation, as well as issues of intersectionality and solidarity during the late 1980s. The event will also feature young activists discussing how people like Nkoli have shaped contemporary political thought and activist practice.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Justice Edwin Cameron: Civil society participation and law reform
  • Mosiuoa Lekota: the Delmas Trial and Simon's coming out
  • Phumi Mtetwa: LGBTIAQ organising and visibility from the early 1990s through to the mid 2000s
  • Busi Deyi: Looking back on Simon and what we have become – Black 'queer' visibility within a classed and male-dominated context
  • Kwezilomso Mbandazayo: Black love and solidarity work – the struggle for freedom without violence
  • Mmapaseka Steve Letsike: HIV work
