GALA Mission Statement The advancement, development and rights of LGBTI people depend on an accurate record and representation of their struggles. GALA mobilises memory by documenting and popularizing the lives and histories of LGBTI South Africans. In so doing it contributes to the development of pride, challenges homophobia and entrenches the rights of LGBTI people. GALA Office and Archive Hours Community Library Hours Contact Us

Resources GALA has been at the forefront of stimulating new avenues of academic enquiry into sexuality and gender in a South African context. In addition to the general research facility provided by GALA, we also undertake specific research projects in order to further enhance knowledge and teaching in these spheres. Some examples included here are an investigation of gender identity for African traditional healers involved in same sex relationships; a research project that focused on the experiences of gay men and lesbians in the South African military; and the Oral History Project . To this end GALA has situated itself within the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WISER). This allows for the possibility of exciting research collaboration within WISER's sexuality project. GALA co-hosted the IASSCS conference on " Sex and Secrecy " with WISER in 2003.
