Formerly called
The Gay and Lesbian Archives, Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA) aims to construct memory and help to instill a sense of self-worth and political purpose in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities
in South Africa.

GALA is a member of the Joint Working Group (JWG), a national network of LGTBI focused organisations in South Africa.

WORTH WATCHING

Nkunzi Zandile Nkabinde is a sangoma and a lesbian. She tells her story in a book called Black Bull, Ancestors and Me. Nkunzi works at Constitution Hill and as a sangoma in Soweto. Life for townships lesbians is not easy. Many have been the victim of hate crimes. Nkunzi feels protected by her ancestors and tries to fight homophobia through her book.

UPCOMING EVENTS

“Home Affairs”

An exhibition at the Apartheid Museum that examines the different ways that people love and form relationships and families. This exhibition is a collaborative project between GALA and TRACE exhibition group.

At the Apartheid Museum from 24 May to October 2008.

“Tracks”

An exhibition at Constitution Hill that looks at the effect of the Constitution and how it came about, as well as the city of Johannesburg, through the lens of the city's gay and lesbian inhabitants.
